Message from Secretary General of China Import and Export Fair
At the opening and celebration ceremony of the 100th Session of Chinese Export Commodities Fair, the Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao announced, on behalf of the Chinese government, that from the 101st session, Chinese Export Commodities Fair (also known as the "Canton Fair") will be renamed as China Import and Export Fair, marking a new historical starting point for the Canton Fair.
For the last 5 decades the Canton Fair took serving China's foreign trade as its responsibility. Today it has become a comprehensive international trade event in China with the longest history, the largest scale, the biggest variety of exhibits, the largest number of buyers and the highest turnover, and enjoys the reputation as "China's No.1 Fair".
The Canton Fair will be given more extensive and profound historical connections after being renamed as "China Import and Export Fair". The 2006 Central Economic Working Conference definitely set forth the important task of "vigorously expanding import", which clearly demonstrates the decision for a fundamental transformation in the implementation of the Chinese foreign trade strategy. Just like fifty years ago when China took a robust step forward to inaugurate the fair, Canton Fair will assume new tasks and set sail for a more brilliant prosperity.
Looking into the future, the Canton Fair, standing on a higher position with a wider horizon and a newer vision, will better server the reform, opening up and the economy construction; make further contributions to the overall goal of building a harmonious socialist society.
In the new historical scenario, as the organizer of the Canton Fair, the China Foreign Trade Centre, will continue to follow the philosophy of "Specialization, Market Orientation, Legalization, Industrialization and Internationalization" so as to effectively organize the fair, to endeavor to explore the organizing methods, mode of holding exhibitions and service system to gear ourselves to the new tasks and the higher demands, and to bring the Fair's experience in conformity with the international practice; It is imperative to effectively change our notion, make endeavors to enhance our service awareness, place excellent service as the foundation of our greater successes so as to keep the Canton Fair in a new historical period in line with the new situations and the higher demands as the world first-class trade fair.

Hotels cut rate to attract guests during 107th Canton Fair
Hoteliers in south China's Guangdong province are slashing prices to attract overseas visitors to the 106th Canton fair scheduled to open next week.
Guangzhou Hotels Association, a regulatory organization that oversees more than 2,000 hoteliers in Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong, has published its detailed advisory prices, which were said to be 20 percent lower than those of previous years.
The list covers rooms at hotels rated two stars or more for next week's fair and the 107th Canton fair in October.
A document posted on the website of Guangzhou Hotels Association lists advisory prices for a standard room, a luxury room and a business suite at a five-star hotel at 1,790 yuan ($263), 1,980 yuan and 2,310 yuan, respectively.
Association president Lin Weimin said Wednesday that reservations were down in comparison with past spring fairs.
Lin said the advisory prices were set after the local government said it would support development of Canton fair, and supply and demand of hotel rooms were studied.
"The fall in reservations shows the impact of the global financial crisis on the real economy is continuing to grow," said Lin.
"We are taking the initiative to adjust our strategy to operate hotels and to attract more guests, hoping to limit the impact."
Hoteliers also had to work hard to improve the quality of services in order to survive, said Lin.
Many Guangzhou hotels are offering rooms at prices lower than the advisory prices stipulated by the association.
A staff member at the five-star Dongfang Hotel, on Liuhua Road, said it was charging on average 400 to 500 yuan less per room compared with a year ago.
More business people are choosing to stay in private apartments near the fair for monthly rents of about 5,000 yuan.
The China Import and Export Fair, commonly known as Canton fair, is regarded as a weather vane of China's foreign trade. The 105th Canton fair would run from April 15 to May 7.
Mu Xinhai, spokesman for the event, said invitations had been sent to 800,000 overseas buyers.
The fair, which will be held in three phases, will accommodate more than 55,000 stands with a total exhibition area of up to 1.1 million square meters.
A total of 55,057 stands had been booked by exhibitors, exceeding the number at the 104th fair last year, said Mu.
Openning of 107th Canton Fair
As the global economy is recovering, international trade has rised 20% compared to the same period of 2009 in the first two days of 107th Canton Fair. Exhibitors also say that buyers from all over the world are more intensive to place their orders. They estimate that the total sales will be 30% more than 2008.
